This contribution is aimed at tackling the original significance of a symbol of Jewish mythical heritage and its connections with some of its later translations into new symbolic frames emerging in medieval times. Biblical and Talmudic studies are interwoven with some successive sagas about telluric artefacts resembling humans, and created by means of holy liturgies: theurgy. The still unsolved controversy between magic (bad) and theurgy (good) is the fil rouge of this metaphorical journey
