All-optical wavelength conversion of PAM-4 signals by cross-gain-modulation (XGM) in semiconductor optical amplifiers is experimentally investigated. It results that, because of the XGM non-linear transfer-function, double-stage schemes must be used for obtaining reliable distortion-free conversions.
