This chapter introduces the origins, evolution, and impacts of the Brazilian bioethanol and biodiesel programs. The economic, environmental, and social impacts of both programs are critically discussed alongside their initial targets. The discussion of the bioethanol program captures the main lessons learned from the Brazilian experience to inform the development of bioethanol schemes around the world, particularly considering the gradual recognition of ethanol as an international market commodity. Additionally, special attention is paid to the reasons behind the apparent failure to promote biodiesel as an effective strategy toward the diversification of biofuel feedstocks and the benefit and empowerment of poor family farmers.

Abstract
This chapter introduces the origins, evolution, and impacts of the Brazilian bioethanol and biodiesel programs. The economic, environmental, and social impacts of both programs are critically discussed alongside their initial targets. The discussion of the bioethanol program captures the main lessons learned from the Brazilian experience to inform the development of bioethanol schemes around the world, particularly considering the gradual recognition of ethanol as an international market commodity. Additionally, special attention is paid to the reasons behind the apparent failure to promote biodiesel as an effective strategy toward the diversification of biofuel feedstocks and the benefit and empowerment of poor family farmers.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
